A Forest Hills High School student won $250 as a winner of an Astoria Federal teen photo contest and helped her teacher get $100 for new school equipment at the same time.
Alyona Rossolova, 17, who is going to be a senior at Forest Hills High School, was selected as one of 12 award winners in Astoria Federal Savings Bank’s annual Teen Photo Contest, whose theme this year was “Faces & Feelings.”
“It’s so refreshing to see hundreds of young adults participate in this contest annually and express themselves in a positive, creative way,” said Astoria Federal Senior Vice President and Director of Marketing Brian Edwards.
Rossolova, who has been interested in photography and the arts for a number of years, took her winning photo of her cousins playing on a beach in Aruba last year.
“I like to take pictures of exotic places,” Rossolova said.
After her art history teacher at Forest Hills High School told Rossolova about the contest, she entered 13 photographs into the Astoria Federal Savings contest.
“I was surprised; I didn’t think I would win but I did,” Rossolova said. “It was exciting.
The annual contest is one of the many ways Astoria Federal is committed to “Putting people first” in the communities it serves, according to Edwards.
“We’re committed to supporting education at every age level, and as a local bank, we understand the importance of being actively involved within the many communities we serve,” Edwards said. “That’s what we believe being a local banking leader is all about!”
