Muriel Cumberbatch Wheeler

Muriel Cumberbatch Wheeler, loving mother, wife, grandmother, aunt and friend, passed away on Tuesday, August 18. She was 85 years old.
After receiving a degree from Hunter College, Wheeler began her career as an Assistant Comptroller for the National Association of Social Workers [NASW]. A long-time resident of East Elmhurst, she and her husband Raleigh decided that she would stay home to raise their three daughters – Robyn, Wanda and Jacqueline.
After their third child became school-aged, Wheeler returned to work in the local community as a bookkeeper with the Jerome Hardeman Day Care Center, where she worked for 14 years. She also performed accounting work for the Langston Hughes Library Action Committee.
As a member of the Corona Seventh-Day Adventist Church since 1967, Wheeler served in several capacities, including pianist, organist, choir director and music coordinator. She also assisted in organizing the Corona Youth Choir, the Corona Sanctuary Choir, and founded the church’s young adult choir – Alpha – which still continues today.
She organized the first Block Association in East Elmhurst and was also an active member of the East Elmhurst Civic Association.
She is survived by her husband, Raleigh Wheeler; daughters Robyn Wheeler Grange, Wanda Wheeler, and Jacqueline Wheeler Lee; sons-in-law Leslie Grange and Robb Lee. She leaves a grandson, Noah Lee; step-grandchildren Jade Grange, Juel Grange, Julien Grange, and Robbie Lee; nieces Gail Wilson and Patricia Hinds; great nephew Darryl Wilson; her godchildren, Carl “Buddy” Schmidt and Heidi Hicks; and “adopted” granddaughter, Ariella Bynam, as well as a host of cousins, friends, and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Gloria Hinds.
