Caution follow Woodhaven rape/robbery

Women in Woodhaven are being extra cautious on the heels of an early-morning sexual attack and robbery late last week in the woods near Forest Park.
“Woodhaven is not a safe neighborhood,” said a female resident of the area who declined to give her name. “The neighborhood used to be beautiful. It seems quiet, but that’s when stuff happens.”
Reports say that the 29-year-old victim had been returning home at 3 a.m. from a hair appointment when the suspect, claiming he was armed, accosted her from behind on Park Lane South and raped her. Before fleeing, he took her wallet, which reportedly contained $30 in cash and bankcards.
According to a police source, the case is being investigated by NYPD’s Special Victim’s Unit.
“Our hearts go out to the victim,” said Maria Thomson, executive director of the Woodhaven Business Improvement District (BID).
“I try not to be alone,” said the woman, who works nights. “I use the ‘buddy system’ and try to park as close to my house as possible. If not, I have friends or family watch me get to my car.”
The resident also told The Courier that a friend and co-worker was pistol-whipped only a few months ago in the area.
“I know that the police are vigorously trying to find the person who did this,” said Thomson. “They do know who they are looking for, and I think they also have DNA, which will maybe give them a clue.”
Reports say that the suspect is a 6’3” black man wearing dark clothing and a bandana.
“Everyone is very concerned and needs to be more cautious,” continued Thomson. “Hopefully they will make an arrest really soon.”
