Meet health providers on Sept. 15

Community members will have a chance to meet with health providers during a Queens Health Coalition (QHC) open house on Tuesday, September 15.

QHC, a non-profit organization, was established in 1996, in order to “link health and social service providers with the underserved communities of Queens.”

The open house, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is open to all individuals and is free to attend. It will include feature presentations, educational materials, prizes and snacks.

“Our mission is to connect people in need of care with those who provide it. Toward that end, our multi-lingual team of professionals goes into communities of Queens to educate and empower the public by offering valuable information, referrals and advice,” said QHC Executive Director Phyllis Shafran. “Our open house reverses the process and invites the public to visit us and our many partners in health care who will also be present.”

The open house will be held at QHC’s office, which is located at 163-11 Depot Road in Flushing. For more information, call 718-762-0346 and ask to speak with Lorena Flores at Ext. 11 or Rose Marie Dorvily at Ext. 14.

QHC recently helped further educate the public during its participation in the “Health Living Forum,” which was sponsored by the Global Healthy Living Foundation and held at the Jamaica Market’s Harvest Room.

Experts from various health care and social service providers spoke during the forum. They addressed topics such as nutrition and chronic illness. The experts also handed out informative materials to the community members.

“We loved being at this event because it provided us with an excellent opportunity to let the public know that the words ‘affordable’ and ‘accessible’ as they relate to health care are not just wishes but can become the reality,” Shafran said. “We’re here to tell them where and how.”
