The St. John’s men’s soccer team came away with a huge win against Louisville in Big East action last Saturday, October 17.
The Red Storm has been plagued with games that end in a draw all season. This 3-2 overtime win over Louisville was a giant victory for the Storm in the divisional standings.
Team captain, Tadeu Terra, scored his second career golden goal – a game winning point in overtime. With that win, St. John’s extends its home unbeaten streak to 18 games.
“We are two really good teams going at it and we never want to give away two goals,” said Marc Reeves, assistant head coach of St. John’s. “Getting a win instead of another tie is big for us.”
Constant action in the first half was capped off when Louisville’s Josh Lipka made it a 1-0 game. He dribbled past two defenders and sent a scorching shot into the back of the net at the 45th minute.
In the 75th minute, St. John’s tied the game, when midfielder Pablo Punyed headed in a goal off Sverre Wegge Gundhus’ corner kick.
Only two minutes later, Gundhus himself helped the Storm take the lead – when he lobbed a shot over the Louisville goalie’s outstretched arms.
Soon after the second St. John’s goal, the Cardinals answered back with a sudden strike from sophomore Colin Rolfe.
As regulation ended, Terra took a final attempt at a game-winning goal, but it was gobbled up and saved by the Louisville keeper.
In overtime, Terra took over.
At the 99th minute of the game, he split two defenders and blasted a shot into the high left end of the goal – winning it for the Storm.
“In terms of record, it was a great win for us because Louisville is a high ranked team,” Reeves said. “We still need to get more wins on the board.”
Big East play continues when St. John’s takes on Brown at home on October 20.
