The recent primary run-off election for the Democratic candidates for City Comptroller and Public Advocate demonstrate the need for elimination of such a needless requirement.
State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, chair of the Senate Committee on Elections pointed out recently that, “The recent run-off election in New York City cost the city upwards of $15 million. This run-off cost the taxpayers up to $72 per vote cast, although in both cases, the winners of the run-off elections were the same as the September primary winners.”
The record low voter turnout of 11 percent in the September 15 primary fell even lower to only eight percent of eligible voters in the run-off election.
We must reform this process, eliminate the run-off elections and stop wasting millions that could be better spent our seniors or our children.
