For the Bayside Raiders, the end of the regular season brought a few well-deserved playoff berths.
Week 10 ended and a couple of divisions capped it off with a big statement win, while others are going to come into playoff week shell shocked from their latest loss.
The junior peewee Raiders took their last chance at regular season play and came away with a huge 38-6 win over the Queens Falcons. They opened up the game on Sunday, November 22, with a quick 8-0 lead and then poured it on with a three touchdown runs by running back Tyrell Abney – a 38, 44, and 80-yard-run left the Falcons in awe.
With that win, the junior peewees prepare for a hard-nosed battle against the Brooklyn Skyhawks on Saturday, November 28.
Behind Coach Tony Griffin, the peewee division steam rolled over of the Queens Falcons in their final game of the season. After an early 8-0 deficit, the pee wee Raiders rallied and never stopped with a downpour of offensive strikes.
Their quarterback, Ben Lim, scrambled his way 30-yards to the end zone in a quarterback keeper player. After the first touchdown, both running backs, Tyrel Plaza and Jamien Williams went on a scoring barrage with 30 unanswered points between the two backs.
“Basically, our defense just shut them down,” Griffin said.
The peewees (4-4) look to next week’s playoff match and hope to stop the Yorkville Eagles at the line of scrimmage and a put a hold on their intense run game.
“Our game plan next week is to shut down their running game and our defense will be our key to victory,” the coach added.
Closing out the week on a low point, the intermediate Raiders (3-4-1) were handed one of their worst loses of the season – a 30-0 loss to the Falcons. They were outplayed by the Falcons who were an offensive juggernaut on Saturday.
“The other team just came out to play…I give them a lot of credit,” said Anthony Goins, assistant coach of the intermediate Raiders. “We will take this loss and look forward to advancing in the playoffs.”
Despite the loss, the Raiders still made the third seed in the playoffs and look to push the tempo before the Skyhawks get a chance to get acclimated.
