AAH Awards ceremony held in Corona

The African-American Heritage (AAH) Awards Ceremony, honoring those who received both achievement and scholarship awards, will be held on Saturday, February 20 at 12:30 p.m. in the Langston Hughes Library in Corona.

Hosted by the Queens Borough President Helen M. Marshall, guests will arrive to a musical interlude by the Flue Ensemble and Brass Quintet of the Howard Symphonic Band, Howard University. Conducted by Kelvin W. Washington for the past 14 years, the Howard University Concert Band is one of the top collegiate symphonic bands in the country.

They were honored to perform the inaugural concert at the first Historically Black Colleges and Universities-National Band Directors, Consortium (HBCU-HBDC) Convention in Atlanta, Georgia in April 2005. They have received outstanding reviews from the city of St. Louis, Missouri in March 2006 and past performances have included concerts in New Orleans, Baltimore, Chicago, and Ontario.

Library Director Andrew P. Jackson will then begin the ceremony with welcoming remarks followed by an invocation by Reverend Eugene R. Palmore of Corona Congregational Church, United Church of Christ.

A dramatic presentation by Urban Stages On Tour will feature “At the Pole,” an account of Matthew Henson, the African American who accompanied Commander Robert Peary to the North Pole.

The awards presentation will begin at about 2:15 p.m. with acknowledgements and closing remarks by 3 p.m.
