The Flushing High School Red Devils prevailed in the Public School Athletic League (PSAL) ‘B’ wrestling championships, defeating Martin Luther King High School, 66-18, at John Browne High School in Flushing on Thursday, February 11. Danny Vasquez pinned MLK’s Tyrek Henegan at 145 pounds, breaking the tie at 18 and setting off Flushing’s domination. The Red Devils, in just their third year wrestling, rattled off seven straight pins after Vasquez’s game-changing victory.

Boys Basketball

Cardozo High School again shook off a late-game collapse against Forest Hills, this time to capture the Queens borough championship at St. Francis College on Sunday, February 14. Cardozo led by as many as 13 points, but were stunned when the Rangers went on a 19-4 run and cut the lead to just three points heading into the final quarter of play. But Judges’ point guards Chris Gayot and Reynaldo Walters came up big in the last session, scoring key baskets in Cardozo’s 51-47 victory.

Christ the King escaped with a victory against Holy Cross on Friday, February 12 in Flushing, rallying to defeat the Knights, 59-56, in overtime. The heavily favored Royals found themselves trailing by 10 points heading into the fourth quarter, but managed to take the lead on junior guard Corey Edwards‘ three-pointer with just over a minute to play. The Knights forced overtime, but Christ the King took over in the extra session and never looked back. Senior center Dominykas Milkas scored 17 points for the Royals, while senior guard Jahleel Felix led Holy Cross with 25.

Girls Basketball

Francis Lewis High School leveled Brooklyn powerhouse Midwood High School, 52-40, to seal an undefeated regular season in the PSAL’s Queens ‘AA’ division in Fresh Meadows on Friday, February 12. Sophomore Jasmine Davis scored 14 points for the Patriots (14-0) and Tatiana Williams contributed 13. Senior Sabrina Jeridore bulldozed Midwood with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Hillcrest High School captured their 14th straight Queens ‘B’ East division with a victory over host Jamaica High School on Thursday, February 11. Senior forward Chanel Wilkerson scored 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who finished the season with a 16-2 record.
