Graffitied post office cleaned again

It’s like a never-ending battle.

After getting the Richmond Hill North Post Office, on 122nd Street and Jamaica Avenue, cleaned up in March of last year, vandals hit the location again recently.

In addition, just last week, it was cleaned again.

“It’s almost like a canvass to them [vandals],” said Wendy Bowne, President of the Richmond Hill Block Association (RHBA), who fielded complaints about the graffiti and alerted the post office.
Bowne said that, “There used to be a really nice mural of famous people on the outside, but then it got graffitied on, and the graffiti was painted over.”

The exterior walls are now blue, and vandals often tag these, she said.

“It’s easy to notice [graffiti] on the walls,” said Mike Khahera, customer service manager at the branch.

Protocol requires managers to submit work orders to the maintenance department of their main post office (in this case, it would be Jamaica, which serves 18 stations in the 114 zip code). Maintenance crews then address the issue.

Khahera said that the clean up happened in less than a month this time around.

A police source conceded last year that it is a graffiti-prone location, but said that the local precinct cannot do graffiti clean-up because it is a government property.

Bowne suggests a “spot check” at least once a week, and Khahera did say that, “Whenever we notice something we put in a work order.”
