Obituary: John Hogan Jr., 71

John J. “Jack” Hogan Jr., a lifelong resident and business leader in Flushing, died Monday. He was 71.

He was born and raised and worked in Flushing his entire life. He grew up over the family business, the Fogarty Funeral Home in downtown Flushing, which he operated as its president from 1960.

Hogan was a pillar of the Flushing community, holding the highest offices in numerous community, charitable, civic and church organizations. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Olympia Council No. 394, Flushing Chamber of Commerce Businessmen’s Association and St. Vincent de Paul Society.

He was also highly respected in the funeral industry, holding various leadership positions in the Metropolitan, New York State and National Funeral Directors associations as well as being a founding member and eventual president of the Catholic Cemetery Guild of the Brooklyn-Queens Diocese.

In 2006, Hogan rose to the pinnacle of his profession by becoming president of the NFDA.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; children John, Robert, Maryann, James and Daniel; and 11 grandchildren.

Hogan’s wake will be held Thursday and Friday at the Quinn-Fogarty Funeral Home in Flushing. The funeral Mass will be at 9:45 a.m. at the Church of Mary’s Nativity in Flushing.
