City teachers need a better raise

It is incomprehensible that Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants teachers to only get a 2 percent raise as a result of the budget crisis affecting the city. This is an insult to every teacher who teaches in the city public school system.

We are all worth more than a 2 percent raise. The mayor and city Schools Chancellor Joel Klein have never taught in a classroom. They have no knowledge of how this bureaucratic, convoluted, screwed up system works. Guess what, folks — it does not work!

Look at all the problems teachers need to deal with: unruly students, difficult and harassing supervisors, no support from school administration, overcrowded classes and lack of teaching supplies.

Most if not all teachers are purchasing supplies with their own money. The city Department of Education needs a complete overhaul in management and it needs to be done now.
