Gaming for a good cause

Play money turned into nearly $20,000 of the real thing recently, when more than 200 people turned out for the American Red Cross (ARC) in Greater New York’s “Queens Casino Night” at Queens College (QC) in Flushing.

Attendees at the Friday, April 23 event got $50 in play money for such popular casino games as blackjack, craps and hold ’em poker, plus appetizers and soft drinks.

For every $50 in casino chips turned in, guests were awarded one raffle ticket for donated prizes, including a 40” LCD HDTV; accommodation at a four-star, five-bedroom condo in Orlando; a weekend getaway in Montauk; golf outings, Yankees and Mets tickets and more.

For the price of admission, non-players got a raffle ticket, food and drink and enjoyed the atmosphere, including dance music by Beat2BeatNYC entertainment.

The proceeds support ARC programs in Queens. “This is a wonderful way to support the Red Cross, which responds to an average of seven emergencies and disasters every day in Greater New York,” said Queens Chair Tina Lee.

“We’re delighted to donate the space and food this evening to help support the Red Cross,” QC President James Muyskens added.

The event was underwritten by the College, along with VLA Construction, Feng Wei Construction, Christina Roofing, Muss Development, Starside Pharmacy, ABC Liquor, Celebrity Tours and Digital Minds Inc.
