The one area where there should not be any cuts is in the area of education. Our children are entitled to a good, solid education and cutting money from education would be devastating to our students, teachers, administrators and parents.
Teachers in America are not treated with the respect other professions are treated with. Just look at how teachers are being treated in the city Department of Education. We still do not yet have a fair contract in place and what 2 percent raises we were going to get from the mayor he has rescinded — due to the budget crisis, he claimed.
Also, he said he needed to rescind that raise, otherwise he was going to go ahead with the threatened layoffs of more than 4,000 teachers. I believe he will lay off these teachers despite what he said. The mayor nor the city schools chancellor are to be trusted.
To them, this is like a cat-and-mouse game. The people of New York City must say no to cuts in our city public school system that will jeopardize classroom instruction.
