Decision To Run: Like our country, New York is in the midst of an economic downturn. Committed concerned leadership is needed now more than ever. My track record demonstrates a progressive agenda, which stands on the right side of issues that best serve my district, our city and state. I offer trusted, experienced, leadership and with your help, I will work to ensure stability and growth in the communities I serve.
Major Issues: The two issues are unemployment and the pressing need for greater improvements in education. Unemployment creates a spiraling effect, which can trigger foreclosures, crime, as well as the loss of vital services that are a safety net for many people. Stopping the spiral begins with retraining and education to pursue jobs and small business opportunities that are readily available. Closing the achievement gap ensures that tomorrow’s workers are ready for college/work. This will in turn grow the state’s future economy.
Some of my accomplishments include:
• In 2009 and 2008, we took the lead in New York State, passing mortgage lending reforms that resulted in a foreclosure rate of 11 percent in New York State as the nation averaged 22 percent. These efforts helped some who were house rich and cash poor to remain in their homes.
• Co-prime sponsor of the first Domestic Workers Bill of Rights in the nation.
• Secured $3 million for campus schools to create an academic environment of high expectations for staff/students.
Top Priorities:
• Secure funding for a community college and a full service hospital.
• Secure funding for sorely needed infrastructure growth such as adequate sewer systems to address flooding; high speed rail; Cross Harbor Tunnel.
• Restoration of $5.5 billion granted in the Campaign for Fiscal Equity case.

Decision To Run? There has been a lack of leadership in our district for a very long time. Many of our important issues and concerns have received little or no attention. We deserve better, and I believe that I can do a much better job addressing our issues in our district and in Albany.
Major Issues: There are many issues affecting my constituents that are paramount, such as; the high foreclosure rate, failing schools, lack of support for seniors, youth violence, etc. Two issues that I would highlight, however, are the economy and jobs and proper funding for youth and senior programs. We must get more people working. We must provide the proper incentives for business to hire and maintain their workforce, and we must attract new businesses to New York. Finally, I would properly fund after-school programs, youth and senior programs. The funding of programs in our area has been irresponsible for decades.
Top Priorities: The first thing that I would focus on if elected is to truly get more of the community involved and to listen to the community. This year, in addition to me, there are over 40 new people running in other positions in our district, such as Donnie and Jo-Ann Whitehead for Democratic State Committee Male and Female, respectively. We will work to reach out to as many people in the community not only to hear their voice but to get them involved.
