FLUSHING MEADOWS CORONA PARK— A Long Island man was charged and arraigned with re-selling US Open tickets equivalent to a value of $10,000 at the United States Tennis Association Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, the Queens DA’s office said last Thursday.
Police allegedly saw accountant Marvin Schaffer, 61, of Glen Cove Avenue on Long Island, handing two US Open tickets to two individuals in exchange for money outside the will call ticket booth at Arthur Ashe Tennis Stadium at noon Aug. 31, the DA’s office said.
The DA’s office said that when searched, Schaffer allegedly had four US Open tickets and $750 in his pants and 335 tickets in a black handbag. The handbag also allegedly contained listings from craigslist, stubHub, ticketsNow and Ticketmaster with Schaffer’s name, account number and sale offers for tickets, the DA’s office said.
The district attorney’s Economic Crimes Bureau drafted a search warrant for Schaffer’s BMW, which was parked in the New York Hall of Science lot, the DA’s office said. The search allegedly recovered four US Open tickets, 20 USTA parking permits, 28 New York Jets parking permits, one US Open program and a US Open seating chart, which was seized for evidence, the DA’s office said.
Schaffer was released on his own recognizance, the DA’s office said. He is ordered to return to court Oct. 21 and will face up to 180 days in jail if convicted, the DA’s office said.
