Beach Channel High School continued its unbeaten streak, blanking August Martin High School (3-3), 28-0, to improve to a Public School Athletic League (PSAL) Bowl division best, 6-0. The Dolphins trampled their opponents, piling 350 yards on the hapless Falcon defense. Running back Adekoyejo Odedere led the ground game with 150 yards on 17 carries with one touchdown. Diequan Underwood made for a competent second option, rushing for 100 yards, while Justin Zemser and Mahamed Sidibe contributed a combined 100 yards on the ground. Dolphins’ quarterback Patrick Burrello was only 3-for-6 in the air, but connected for two touchdowns to receiver Henry Adegunle, icing the game. Beach Channel’s defense has been the constant dominating factor this year, as the Dolphins have outscored their opponents a jarring 180-12 in six games this season. Beach Channel takes their soaring offense and stifling defense to Springfield Gardens next, as they take on the 1-and-5 Golden Eagles.
Springfield Gardens is coming off a drubbing at the hands of Samuel J. Tilden, losing 46-6, at home on Saturday, October 16. The Blue Devils (3-3) ran all over the Golden Eagles, outgaining them 289 to 127, while gaining over 15 yards per run. The passing game was no help for Springfield, as quarterback Christophe Turnage went 0-for-6 through the air.
The passing game also unraveled Bayside High School. Quarterbacks Arshdeep Singh threw one interception and his replacement Ryan Bonwich threw two as the Commodores lost, 26-12, to South Bronx at home on Saturday, October 16. The Commodores’ competent running attack managed to grind out 180 yards, but South Bronx was equal to the task and then some. Bronx running back Arbely Soto rushed for 78 yards and three touchdowns and Joseph Garcia carried for 128 yards and one touchdown. Bayside has lost three consecutive games since starting the season 3-0 and now will take on Christopher Columbus High School at home on Saturday, October 23.
Long Island City won their second straight game, defeating Jamaica, 30-6, on Saturday, October 16. Quarterback Emilio Gigliotti was impressive for the Bulldogs, completing nine passes for 189 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. He also dictated the ground game, rushing for 90 yards and two more touchdowns. Receiver Joshua Levy was everywhere Gigliotti needed him to be, gaining 130 yards through the air and catching both touchdown passes. Long Island City’s next test comes against August Martin on Saturday, October 23.
In the Queens junior varsity division, Benjamin Cardozo High School improved to 4-0 after drubbing Information Technology High School, 52-0, at home on Sunday, October 17. Cardozo’s offense gained 267 yards, while their defense held Info Tech to nine total yards. It was the ground game that led the way for Cardozo, as running backs Christophe Quiroz, Fabian Bramwell, Jensan Liu, Jeromie Ferdinand and Tevin Brown spread the ball around for 186 total yards and three touchdowns.
