Schumer, Gillibrand return to Washington

?Democratic incumbent U.S. Senator Charles Schumer overcame Republican challenger Jay Townsend and earned himself a third term. Schumer defeated Townsendby a more than 30 percent margin.
? Junior U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand faced Republican Joe DioGuardi and five other candidates, but managed to hold on to her seat with more than 60 percent of the vote. Governor David Paterson appointed Gillibrand to the U.S. Senate after former Senator Hillary Clinton was named Secretary of State. The race was a special election held to fill out the remaining two years of the term started by Clinton in 2006.
