Boys’ Basketball
The Bayside Commodores have won their first three games of the season. In their last game against Flushing High School (1-3), Bayside won by a score of 68-43. Senior William Dobie led all Bayside scorers with 23 points. For the season, Dobie has averaged 16 points. Junior Uzonna Akazi had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. In three games this season, Akazi has averaged 17 points a game with a little over eight rebounds a game. Sophomore Austin Williams was the only other player to score in double digits with 13. For the Flushing Red Devils, there was only one player to reach double digits in scoring, Senior Leahcim James scored 10 points.

The John Adams Spartans improved to 3-1 with a 67-37 win against the Franklin K. Lane Campus Knights (1-3). At this point last season the Spartans were 0-4 and last in the division – this season the Spartans lead the Queens A West Division. Senior Joshua Nazario has helped turn around the Spartans, leading them in scoring with a little over 15 points a game. The Knights could not handle the offense or the defense of the Spartans. Adams did not allow even one Knight’s player to reach double digits in points. Senior Sawn Way tied for the team lead in points with nine and had a team high seven rebounds. Joshua Jordan had nine points to go along with two rebounds and two assists. Next up for the Spartans will be the Springfield Gardens Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles (3-1) beat the Hillcrest Hawks by a score of 62-43, putting them in a three way tie in first place with the Spartans and the High School for Construction Red Hawks. For the season, senior Chukwuemek Okoloji leads the Golden Eagles in scoring with 13 points a game. Senior Terrence George leads the Golden Eagles in rebounds for the season with a little over five a game. In this latest loss for the Hawks, two players were able to reach double figures in points – senior Shirland Reeves had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds and senior Daniel Hemmings added 10 points of his own.

The Red Hawks beat the Richmond Hill Lions (1-3) by a score of 60-58. Senior John Galimi led the Red Hawks in scoring with 20 points, while Ehiavekhan Eromoselle had a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds, a team high. Junior Rudranauth Sewsankar rounded out the double digit scorers with 14 points.

Men’s Basketball
The York College men’s basketball team erased a 17-point first-half deficit and defeated SUNY Old Westbury 66-64 in a thriller at the CUNY Coaches vs. Cancer Classic held at Lehman College on Sunday, December 12. York (3-8) opened the second half with an 8-0 run thanks to junior forward William Holley and sophomore forward Shamir Wilkinson. But the top scorer of the game was York’s was senior forward Marcel Esonwune who scored a game high 27 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked three shots. Old Westbury (2-5) was led by Frantz Granjean, who finished with 21 points and ten boards. – Steve Mosco
