New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) spokesperson Allan Fromberg’s statement “that the line (Q79 van) could not be extended to the Floral Park (LIRR Station) because it is in Nassau County, out of the TLC’s jurisdiction” in “Q79 riders ‘forgotten’” (Jano Tantongco – January 20) was disappointing.
If neighbors can talk to neighbors, can’t government agencies within New York City talk to their counterparts in the Village of Floral Park and Nassau County? It was no surprise that the Q79 van operator suspended service.
The van operator must survive on sufficient riders providing fare box revenues as there is no city subsidy. Frombergs should suggest to his boss — TLC David Yassky, that he needs to work with Queens politicians in negotiating with the Village of Floral Park. These elected officials could also offer to allocate a small portion of their respective individual member item budget allocations to help subsidize this service.
