Prevent teacher layoffs

The papers are filled with the news that there will be 4,666 teachers that will be terminated. The projected layoffs would hit 9 percent of elementary school teachers citywide, including all those hired in the past four years. Also 15 percent of art, music, gym and library teachers would go. The cuts would affect 80 percent of the city’s approximately 1,200 schools.

Firing just one good teacher is bad for the city, our towns and communities. Education builds the city and without good teachers, a city dies. The mayor must realize that the children are the city’s future and without good teachers we fail the children directly.
