244,000 jobs added in April
The U.S. economy added 244,000 jobs in April, the Department of Labor reported.
Though more jobs were added, unemployment rose from 8.8 percent in March to 9 percent in April.
The number of jobs added exceeded expectations by 60,000. Most of the new jobs came from the private sector which added 268,000 jobs.
March had previously also gained over 200,000 jobs.

2nd annual Cinco de Mayo Street Fair

Healthfirst and Elmhurst Hospital Center will be holding their second annual Cinco de Mayo Street Fair on Friday, May 6.

The event is open to all Queens residents and will honor Jorge Muñoz who recently the Presidential Citizens Medal from President Obama for his efforts in distributing free home-cooked meals to needy people in New York through his An Angel in Queens organization.

The fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Elmhurst Hospital Center, 41st Avenue and 81st Street.

Gas prices climb towards record highs

New York City gas continued to rise towards records prices this past week.

According to AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report, the average gas price in the city is $4.267 up ten cents from a week ago.

Gas prices a year ago were $3.10 per gallon and the price has risen more than 40 cents in the past month.

The highest recorded gas prices in the city were recorded on July 16, 2008 when the price hit $4.411.

Free performance of U.S. premier of A Scent of Time

Eight members of the Beijing Dance Academy will perform excerpts from the U.S. premiere of a ballet, A Scent of Time on Saturday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m.

The free public performance, choreographed by leading contemporary performance artist Yin Mei, will take place at Queens College’s LeFrak Concert Hall.

Two toll plazas to be closed on RFK Bridge

Two toll plazas will be closed for up to a month on the Bronx side of the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge while deck replacement work is finished.

The work at the tolls that lead to Queens will require around the clock closure of the two lanes just to the right of the toll plaza center.

One E-ZPass and three cash lanes will be to the right of the construction with three E-ZPass lanes also on the left.

The work is to remove old concrete, repair steel rebar and install a new section of roadway decking.
