Cops chase L.I. driver, find marijuana: Brown

HOWARD BEACH — A Long Island man was arrested two weeks ago after he led a police officer on a wild ride, the Queens district attorney’s office said.

John Camacho, 26, of Hempstead, was arraigned June 2 on several charges, including reckless endangerment, unlawfully fleeing a police officer and criminal possession of marijuana, according to the Queens DA’s office.

Around midnight that day, an officer observed Camacho allegedly speeding past a stop sign at 85th Street and Sutter Avenue, the criminal complaint said. The officer turned on his lights and followed Camacho, who allegedly went through several stop signs at a high rate of speed, according to the complaint.

The officer caught up with the motorist at the corner of Cross Bay Boulevard and Pitkin Avenue, where Camacho’s vehicle was involved in an accident, the complaint said. Camacho’s car had extensive damage to its passenger side while the other vehicle had damage in the front, the complaint said.

The officer recovered a bag of marijuana from Camacho’s vehicle and the motorist allegedly told the officer he fled from him because he did not want the contraband discovered, according to the criminal complaint.
