Do not lay off city workers

The mayor’s proposal to shutter some 20 firehouses throughout the city due to the budget crisis is simply unacceptable.

The safety of the people of this city must not and will not be jeopardized. The mayor needs to cut the budget in such ways that not one city firefighter, police officer or teacher will have to be laid off. Open up the city treasury and use the $3 billion budget surplus that is there. The mayor has to stop playing political hardball with hardworking, dedicated city workers.

Enough is enough. It is time for the people of this city to stand up and be heard via their elected officials on the City Council. Our elected officials need to take a united stand against all of the mayor’s proposed budget cuts.
