The Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Health issued an Air Quality Advisory for Queens until 11 p.m. tonight.
When the Air Quality Index (AQI) is forecast to exceed 100 an advisory is issued. The index is a correlation of levels of different pollutants in the air. The higher the AQI, the higher the health concern. The pollutant of concern in this advisory is ozone.
Children, those working outdoors and those with respiratory disease are at the greatest risk and should consider limiting strenuous outdoor activities.
The summer heat can lead to the formation of ground level ozone a major component of smog. Exhaust from cars is one of the leading causes of ground-level ozone. When outdoor levels of ozone are elevated, going indoors will usually reduce your exposure.
