Good police work leads to arrest in string of robberies

A 37-year-old man was arrested and six victims positively identified their belongings following a months-long burglary spree in Deepdale Gardens.

According to Captain Ronald D. Leyson of the 111th Precinct, since February 21 of this year, there have been 15 burglaries in the  Deepdale Gardens and Beech Hills co-op complexes in Little Neck. The thief had been primarily stealing jewelry and electronics.

Crime Prevention tactics were used, and the Detective Squad was investigating the case. One resident told police that a man by the name of “Sussman” knocked on his door and said he had lived there and inquired about his mail. Officers followed the lead and found a man by the same name pawning jewelry in the area and in Nassau County.  The man also had one arrest in 2005 for drugs, say cops.

“We were watching the name,” said Leyson, who noted that address(es) given at the pawn shops were invalid.

Sergeant Anthony Speruta contacted Nassau police, and through intelligence, they discovered a guitar that had been reported stolen was sold to a pawn shop. The victim positively identified his instrument and cops traced a name and address to Deepdale Gardens.

“We put a plan into effect to arrest him,” said Leyson.

The Anti-Crime Unit spotted the man’s car and Adam Sussmn, 37, was taken into custody without incident.

Following the execution of a search warrant, officers recovered jewelry and electronics; six people positively identified their belongings.

Sussman is charged with burglary and possession of stolen property. He has not confessed to the crimes. The investigation is ongoing.
