High winds sent a giant billboard crashing down onto the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and a nearby garage in Greenpoint last Friday afternoon, Jan. 13- but miraculously, no one was injured, FDNY sources said. Reportedly, the billboard-which was about 60′- tall and 300′ wide-collapsed onto the westbound lanes of the expressway above Meeker Avenue near Graham Avenue at around 2:30 p.m. Among the units that responded to the scene were Engine companies 216, 229 and 238; Ladder companies 106, 116 and 146; Squad Co. 252; Rescue Units 2 and 4; Rescue Collapse Unit 4; Battalions 28 and 35; Division 11; the 94th Precinct; NYPD Emergency Services Unit 8 and crews from various city agencies. The BQE was briefly closed while crews scrambled to clear debris from the roadway. Reportedly, a Buildings Department investigation found that the billboard’s placement violated its rule prohibiting such signs within 200′ of a major highway.
