Recycle Electronic Items at Qns. Botanical Garden

Drop Off Unneeded High-Tech Devices

The Lower East Side Ecology Center will host an electronic waste (e-waste) recycling event at Queens Botanical Garden in Flushing this Sunday Jan. 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Organizers are encouraging Queens residents to bring their unwanted and broken electronics, free of charge, to the garden located at 43- 50 Main St. Visitors are asked to enter at the garden parking lot at the Crommelin Street entrance.

The event will accept the usual tangles of defunct holiday string lights and a range of other electronics including computers, fax machines, copiers, cell phones, televisions, cameras, and stereo equipment. Many of these devices contain materials such as lead, cadmium, and mercury that can be hazardous to human health and the environment if not properly recycled.

With the aid of community partners, the Lower East Side Ecology Center attracts large numbers of local residents to e-waste events throughout the year, reporting over 400 tons of electronics responsibly recycled in 2011 alone.

As a special thanks to recyclers who attend on Jan. 8, event co-sponsor Tekserve is offering free entry into a raffle for an Apple MacBook Air and a special Mystery Coupon worth between $5 to $500 at the Tek-
