Lady Cougars Wrap Up Special Season

Win Tournament In Comeback Style

The Martin Luther School Lady Cougars struggled in the first half of their championship game, down 10-6 first quarter and 20-19 at half time. They picked up the pace, playing man to man defense, stealing the ball 16 times and scoring 32 points in the second half, leading to a 51-26 win over Legacy in the finals of the Lexington Tournament, played on Monday, Feb. 13.

Domenica Galarraga played outstanding defense against Legacy’s best player holding her to only nine points in the second half and scoring a career high eight points. Dana Azzaro lead all scorers with 28 points, Leslly Marmolejo had her second double-double of the tournament with 11 points and 10 steals, Franchon Martinez contributed four points and eight rebounds, and Xena Andersen added four steals and four rebounds. Toya Brown, Jessica Rufle, Katelyn Velez and Dominique Bratton had a good first round game against. Winston and contributed to the team’s overall success.

The Lady Cougars finished out the season with a 14-1 record and winners of the Martin Luther Invitational Tournament, PSAA Division Championship, Runner Up PSAA Championship and the Championship of the Lexington Tournament.

Wrestling

The Martin Luther School Cougars placed eight wrestlers in the top six enroute to a fifth-place finish at the 2012 NYS Private Schools Tournament.

Sophomore Tommy McLoughlin won the 126 lbs. weight class, while sophomore Kyle Morrissey (113 lbs.), senior Jason Cuadrado (132 lbs.), and junior Raul Figueroa (195 lbs.) placed second.

Sophomore Alex Ortiz (160 lbs.) finished third, while junior Wally Rosario (120 lbs.) and freshman Nate Glosson (154 lbs.) finished fifth in their weight classes.

Lawrence Jimenez (220 lbs.) finished in sixth as the team was honored with the 2012 Most Improved Team Award.

For Martin Luther (10-5), McLoughlin became the school’s 34th state champion since 1966 and now will be traveling to Lehigh University Feb. 23-25 to compete in the National Prep Tournament as part of the New York State Zone contingent.
