LONG ISLAND CITY — Police were asking for the public’s assistance in locating a man, who they said swiped an unattended pocketbook from a mechanic in Long Island City last month.

The suspect went into the Central Collision auto repair shop, at 10-12 36th Ave., at about 7 a.m. Feb. 15 and stole the purse from a desk, according to the NYPD.

Police said the bag contained a wallet, cash and credit cards. About 15 minutes later, the man tried unsuccessfully to use an American Express card that had been inside the pocketbook at an ATM less than a mile away, police said.

The suspect is described as black and was wearing blue jeans, a dark, puffy jacket and a black winter cap with ear flaps, according to the NYPD.
