New L. I. C. Swim Program Helps Those with Autism

YMCA, Con Ed Team Up To Teach Aquatic Skills

The Long Island City YMCA and Con Edison have partnered up with Quality Services for the Autism Community (QSAC) to bring persons with autism an aquatics program that builds skills while enhancing self-confidence and well-being, it was announced this week.

The swim program focuses on three key components, including personal safety, personal growth, and stroke development. It is designed to offer lessons in swimming skills and water safety that will keep participants safe while building physical and social skills.

Lessons are developmentally appropriate and delivered in a caring atmosphere.

“Con Edison is proud to financially support the partnership between the Long Island City YMCA and QSAC to offer the swim program,” Arthur Cronson, Con Edison public affairs manager and member of the Long Island City YMCA Board of Managers, said.

QSAC is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing services to persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) throughout the city and Long Island.

“Exercise and physical fitness are important components of a healthy lifestyle and we are very grateful to the LIC YMCA and Con Ed for this opportunity,” QSAC Director of Day Habilitation Lauren Maldonado said. “Everyone looks forward to these weekly sessions which are not only instrumental for exercise and skills development but also for socialization.”
