Parks employee dies working on 9/11 memorial

ROCKAWAYS — Mayor Michael Bloomberg and city Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe announced Friday that a city worker died while working on the 9/11 Memorial in Tribute Park in the Rockaways.

Bloomberg said Jeffrey Barbieri had worked as a cement mason with the Parks Department for 3 1/2 years, usually renovating parks. He collapsed while working on the memorial, at 116th Street and Beach Channel Drive, and died at St. John’s Hospital later.

Benepe said Barbieri had died from a pulmonary embolism. His organs will be donated as per his wishes.

“We thank Jeff for this selfless act and his service to the city and offer our sympathy and condolences to his family, friends and colleagues in the Parks Department,” Benepe said in a statement.
