Tennis Competition Runs Through Sun.
The 25th annual Mayor’s Cup Championships presented by Reliance Communications began play on Saturday, June 2 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
In the Middle School team competition, M.S. 67 claimed the championship by winning a highly contested match against Wagner Middle School by a score of 3-2.
Following the Middle School final, Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity teams competed in their semifinal rounds.
In the Girls’ Varsity team competition, defending champions and top seed, St. Francis Prep advanced to the finals by sweeping Beacon High School 5-0. Leon M. Goldstein High School also cruised to the finals defeating Benjamin Cardozo High School 5-0. In the final, Leon M. Goldstein High School stunned St. Francis Prep with a 3-2 upset to win the championship.
Boys’ top seed and defending champions, Beacon High School advanced to the finals with ease over Trinity High School with a team score of 5-0. Second seed Horace Mann battled their way into the finals, defeating Benjamin Cardozo High School 3-2. In the highly anticipated final, Beacon H.S. retained the team championship knocking off Horace Mann 4-1.
The tournament continues through Friday, June 10 (3pm-7pm); Saturday, June 9 (9am-3pm) and Sunday, June 10 (9am-3 pm). The Mayor’s Cup Awards Ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. following the final match on Sunday, June 10. Admission is free of charge and tickets are not required.
