June 6, 2012 Staff Report
The Pathmark Supercenter, located at 42-02 Northern Boulevard in Long Island City, will close on August 27th, according to Marcy Connor, a company spokeswoman.
There has been speculation about the fate of the store since December 2010 when the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, better known as A&P, filed for bankruptcy. A&P owns the store.
The August closing date is four months before the store’s lease expires.
“We notified our union partners on May 23rd, and we began notifying associates on May 29th,”
Connor wrote in a statement. “While this is a very difficult circumstance for our associates, customers, partners and the local communities, we remain focused on providing great value and service to our customers.”
A&P owns 14 other Pathmark and Waldbaum’s supermarkets in Queens.
