Special needs Little League to continue next year

The Glen Oaks Little League Challenger Division for Special Needs Children is gearing up for another spring season next year for children with physical and mental challenges.

The Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League to enable boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages four to 18, or up to age 21 if still enrolled in high school, to play baseball.

The season will start sometime in spring 2013 and run to the end of June with the possibility of an extension.

The fields are located on 74th Avenue and 260th Street.

The Glen Oaks Little League Challenger Division was supported by the Steven J. Petillo Field of Dreams Foundation in honor of Petillo, who loved to play baseball. Petillo was a 9-year-old lover of baseball and was also a big New York Yankees fan.

Petillo died in an August 2010 car accident and his memory has been preserved in the Steven Petillo Field of Dreams Foundation.
