ASTORIA — Two pedestrians were injured Friday after being caught in the middle of a driver slamming into parked cars in Astoria, police said.

Witnesses near the scene, at the intersection of Vernon Boulevard and 11th Street in Astoria, said they saw one older male driver run a stop sign on 12th Street before driving his car in reverse down Broadway and hitting a parked car and two passersby.

The names of the driver and pedestrians were not released, as there was no criminality in the incident, police said.

George Bentouratos, 31, a manager who works at the Skyline Auto Service Center across the street from the accident, said he saw the driver with a handicap license plate first crash into a truck near the intersection of 12th Street and Broadway before driving in reverse into the parked cars.

“It was more of a shock than anything else,” he said. “There is always something.”

The driver and pedestrians were treated by emergency responders before being taken to a nearby hospital. Bentouratos said their injuries appeared to be minor.
