Enjoy a ‘spooktacular’ Time at Cemetery In Kew Gardens

Halloween Fun At Maple Grove On Oct. 20

Adults and children of all ages are invited to the Great Halloween Event and Carved Pumpkin Contest on Saturday, Oct. 20, at Maple Grove Cemetery in Kew Gardens.

Sponsored by the Friends of Maple Grove Cemetery, the festivities will take place beginning at 2 p.m. at the cemetery located at 83-15 Kew Gardens Rd., off Lefferts Boulevard.

The day’s program will be launched for adults and children 12 years of age and older with a Touch of the Paranormal Walking Tour, an annual Halloween favorite. Led by Maple Grove’s historian, Carl Ballenas, visitors will hear some true tales that should only be told at Halloween.

At 3:45 p.m., the children’s portion of this Halloween event will begin with a 15-minute costume parade. At 4 p.m., there will be expert storytelling, face painting, holiday crafts and lots of carved pumpkins to admire.

For those who would like to participate in the Carved Pumpkin Contest (adults and children), bring along a pre-carved pumpkin with a candle inside. Pumpkin dropoff is from 3 to 5 p.m., and viewing from 5 to 6 p.m., at the cemetery.

Judging and prizes will be awarded to; overall top pumpkin, funniest, scariest, cutest, most origi- nal or any other categories that the judges might invent. Judges will consider alternative vegetables such as eggplant, water chestnuts, endive or any carved vegetable.

This year and with weather permitting, the program will also feature a special event, “City Skies: Using a Celestron Telescope.” Astronomy specialist Randy Baron will show you the gems of the sky; the waxing crescent moon, the Andromdeda galaxy and beautiful star clusters.

A $5 donation is requested for admission; Friends of Maple Grove members and children under 12 are admitted free.
