Pulling No Punches at Debates

Senate Candidates Spar In Midville

With Election Day drawing ever closer, the candidates for the Sixth Congressional District and 15th State Senate District seats squared off at debates sponsored by the Times Newsweekly, the New York Daily News and the Juniper Park Civic Association last Thursday night, Oct. 18, in Middle Village.

Things got tense between State Sen. Joseph Addabbo (right) and City Council Member Eric Ulrich at last Thursday’s debate in Middle Village.

State Sen. Joseph Addabbo, the Democratic incumbent, and City Council Member Eric Ulrich, the Republican challenger, provided the audience at Our Lady of Hope Auditorium with a debate as contentious as the recent ones between President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romfered

The 15th Senate District candidates traded barbs and accusations on a host of issues from discretionary funding to campaign mailers.

The debate for the open Sixth Congressional District seat between Democratic Assemblywoman Grace Meng and Republican City Council Member Daniel Halloran was also not lacking of drama, as both candidates questioned each other’s records and outlined their own plans for the city, state and country.

Both hour-long showdowns were moderated by the Daily News’ Lisa Colangelo and featured questions asked by a panel of journalists including the Times Newsweekly’s Sam Goldman, Capital New York’s Azi Paybarah and Times-Ledger Newspapers’ Joe Anuta. Questions submitted by audience members were also asked of each candidate.

On the heels of last Thursday’s debate, Addabbo and Ulrich squared off again at the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association meeting last Saturday, Oct. 20.
