Queens leads the city in optimism: poll

While New Yorkers reputation as gruff and cynical often proceed them, a new survey found them to be optimistic about the future of the city — with Queens residents being the most positive.

The Municipal Art Society of New York released its third annual survey on livability in the five boroughs with 81 percent of respondents being “optimistic” or “very optimistic” on the city’s future. Nearly a quarter of Queens residents said they were very optimistic, the highest among the boroughs.

For the third consecutive year, eighty-four percent of city residents were satisfied with the city and their neighborhood as a place to live. Citywide, the biggest threat to the city’s livability is employment opportunities followed by safety, residents said.

Locals displayed borough pride when choosing the best place to live; a majority of residents chose their own borough as the best when surveyed. Overall, Manhattan was chosen as the best borough to live in by 28 percent of residents, with Queens coming in second at 25 percent.

Aside from being the most optimistic, Queens topped the list of providing the best value for your money.

The survey was conducted Marist College Institute for Public Opinion for the MAS between August 28 and August 31 of 1,324 city adults.
