A northeast Queens Assemblyman announced he would help sponsor a Hillcrest food drive so storm victims could stock up, officials said.
Through the end of this week, Assemblyman Rory Lancman (D-Fresh Meadows) said he and Democratic candidate for Lancman’s seat Nily Rozic will sponsor a food and supplies drive to benefit local victims of Hurricane Sandy, which swept through Queens Monday night leaving thousands without electricity.
The drive will be accepting donations in the form of unopened nonperishable food and new and used clothing in good condition between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily until the end of this week at his office, 159-16 Union Turnpike, Suite 210, Hillcrest. The donations will be delivered to affected areas throughout New York City, Lancman and Rozic said.
Food and clothing will also be accepted at other times through pickup, if residents call Lancman’s office at (718) 820-0241 or Rozic’s campaign at (646) 389-6459, Rozic said.
As of Thursday afternoon, Consolidated Edison reported more than 91,000 customers in Queens without power. The utility said the power would not be completely restored for another seven to 10 days.
Rozic was also out in Flushing Heights on Thursday morning with workers at Local 1010 to help clear out debris and downed trees in the area. She posted updates and photos of the work on her Twitter page while asking followers where the problem areas were in their neighborhood.
