The lights on the Sunnyside Arch are working again– after being out for about eight months.

The lights started working again over the weekend, and are currently red and green to reflect the holidays. The colors can be easily changed to represent various festivities, such as green for St. Patrick’s Day.

The outage was the result of problems pertaining to the control box and wiring. When they went out, the company that did the initial work believed it had met its obligations and was not required to fix it.

Joe Conley, the chair of Community Board 2, brought it to the attention of the Economic Development Corp. in October, and an agreement was reached with the contractor to fix them. It was brought to Conley’s attention in October, after a resident wondered why the lights had been out so long.

The work required that 46th Street (by the Arch) had to be closed at certain times, which meant the Department of Transportation got involved. “Therefore it took longer than expected,” Conley said.
