ST. ALBANS — A 32-year-old woman was charged with first-degree assault after she allegedly shook her 3-month-old daughter, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
Edelyne Louis was arrested Jul. 19 on charges that she allegedly shook her baby to stop her from crying, causing her to sustain head trauma and potentially Shaken Baby Syndrome, the DA said.
“Instead of protecting and nurturing her daughter, this defendant is accused of shaking the infant twice in two days to stop her from crying,” Brown said. “The child now faces an uncertain future. This case is a sad reminder that never, under any circumstances, should an infant be shaken.”
Brown said Louis was caring for her child Britney around 10 p.m. inside her St. Albans home when she became agitated by the baby’s crying and allegedly shook her several times to silence her. The baby then quieted down and went to sleep, the district attorney said.
A similar incident occurred the following day, causing the child to vomit and run a fever, Brown said. The baby was taken to Queens Hospital Center and transferred to Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center, where doctors found she had bleeding on the brain and in her eye, potentially resulting in a chronic head injury and permanent developmental delay, the district attorney said.
Louis could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted, the DA said.
