Two local business improvements districts (BIDs) took home distinguished awards at the 12th Annual Neighborhood Achievement Awards.
On July 15, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Deputy Mayor for Economic Development Robert K. Steel, and New York City Department of Small Business Services Commissioner Robert W. Walsh presented the 2013 awards at Gracie Mansion to honorees from the five boroughs for their tremendous impact on New York City’s neighborhoods.
Laurel Brown, executive director of the Jamaica Center BID, and Gayle Baron, executive director of the Long Island City BID and president of the Long Island City Business Development Corporation, were two of three individuals who each received the BID Leadership Award.
Other categories include the Small Business of the Year, Entrepreneur Award, Norman Buchbinder Placemaking Award, Adaptive Reuse/Preservation Award, the Cultural Award, the Workforce Service Award, and this year’s new category called the Helping Hand Award, given to a business, organization, or individual that went beyond in helping those affected by Superstorm Sandy.
“For the past 12 years the Neighborhood Achievement Awards have spotlighted the remarkable small businesses, individuals, and organizations helping to strengthen neighborhoods in all five boroughs, and this year we are also recognizing those that went above and beyond to help after Hurricane Sandy,” said Walsh.
