Every dog has their day, but these dogs are on a roll.
The Ozone Howard Huskies eight and under Little League team defeated Elmjack Little League, 3-0, on Tuesday, August 27, to win the crown in the Glen Cove Mayors Trophy Tournament.
Huskies pitcher John Sapia threw the complete game shutout in the effort with battery mate Andrew Menechella. Ozone Howard went 7-1 in the tournament overall and took revenge by winning the championship, after losing to Elmjack, 3-2, in an earlier match-up.
“It was an amazing game to be a part of,” coach Joe Torres said. “From the kids to the coaches we were pumped up. We wanted to go home with that trophy. I never met a tougher bunch of kids than the Huskies.”
The tournament win adds one more for Ozone Howard. The Huskies won in a tournament hosted by Oceanside Little League on July 25, by defeating the host, 7-5. In that tournament they went undefeated for six games.
“For such little kids, these kids have such a big heart,” manager Andy Menechella said. “They have so much fight and the willingness to play hard and keep winning. This championship win was well deserved, and I’m looking forward to see what this team has in the bright future ahead of them.”
