Dazies is an institution in Sunnyside - for years, beloved Lily Gavin has reigned as Queen of the realm and now her daughter is there too, adding to the warmth of the greeting when you arrive for lunch or dinner.
I have been there many times and recently enjoyed a wonderful lunch. The luncheon menu is available Monday to Friday from noon to 3 p.m. It’s obviously very popular since the dining room was very busy the day I was there!
A few weeks ago, Lily hosted Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, when she came to Queens. Even though the dining room only seats about 50, there is an adjacent room perfect for private parties.
What is interesting is that the chef has created a well-priced lunch menu that includes different dishes from the dinner menu. Therefore, you can come for lunch and then come back for dinner! You’re never disappointed.
I ate lightly because I knew I was eating a large dinner that night - so I only ordered two appetizers. I loved the chopped shrimp, tomato and fresh, tasty mozzarella on a bed of radicchio. It was a filling and sizeable portion. Then I had the saut/ed mussels and saffron tomato in a light garlic white wine sauce. I was tempted to absorb it on the delicious crusty Italian bread, but I behaved myself and used a soupspoon. The “gravy” was so good I did not want to miss an ounce. My companion had the homemade noodle Rigatoni with broccoli rabe, sweet sausage and grilled chicken. An unusual but good blend of flavors.
At dinner, there are extensive selections of veal, seafood, steaks and chops. A large wine menu and cocktails are served and there is a handsome bar area for drinks before dinner too. All the entries are served with the soup of the day or salad.
The warm beautiful environment, great food, and friendly, helpful staff make a meal at Dazies an experience of eating at the best of the best restaurants in Queens.
There are wonderful desserts with my favorite cheesecake or a large selection from the rolling bar.
