Suspect Collared For Ridgewood Beatdown
Detectives slapped the cuffs on an Elmhurst man last Wednesday, Feb. 19, for allegedly participating in the group assault and stabbing of a man in Ridgewood last month, law enforcement sources stated.
Police identified the perpetrator as Wei Yi Yu, 30, of 82nd Street. Three unidentified cohorts reportedly remain at large as of press time Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 26.
Law enforcement sources said the beatdown occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 9 at the corner of Hart Street and Cypress Avenue.
According to information provided by the Queens District Attorney’s office, Yu and the three unknown accomplices allegedly approached a 36-year-old man at the intersection.
Wielding baseball bats, authorities said, the group allegedly clubbed the man repeatedly, knocking him to the ground. After he hit the pavement, police noted, the suspects stomped on him about the body.
Sources familiar with the investigation said the motive for the attack remains unknown and under investigation.
Seconds later, authorities said, Yu allegedly stabbed the man in the back multiple times with a sharp object. Following the stabbing, the group reportedly fled the scene in an unknown direction.
Members of the 104th Precinct and EMS units responded to the scene. Paramedics rushed the victim to a local hospital for treatment of injuries which included a puncture wound to his back and a forehead laceration.
Based on information obtained during the 104th Precinct Detective Squad’s investigation, Yu was tracked down and taken into custody last Wednesday. He was charged by Det. Sebastian Chichotky with second-degree gang assault, secondand third-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
According to court records, Yu was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court the following day, Thursday, Feb. 20, before Judge Michele Armstrong and ordered held on $20,000 bail. He is scheduled to return to court on Mar. 6.
