Businesses Gone In Jackson Hts. Blaze

Three people were injured and several small businesses were heavily damaged by a five-alarm inferno at a Jackson Heights building on Monday, Apr. 21. Reportedly, the inferno ignited at about 5:45 p.m. on 37th Avenue near 74th Street. According to City Council Member Daniel Dromm, the fire destroyed the headquarters of Queens Community House, the area’s LGBT senior center, Plaza College “and about 50 small businesses on the ground floor and in the building itself.” More than 50 Fire Department units responded to the inferno along with the 115th Precinct and EMS units. The victims were treated at local hospitals for injuries not described as life-threatening. Fire marshals are investigating the cause of the blaze, which was finally brought under control by firefighters about six hours after it started.
