CK Clinches Yet Another First Div. Crown
In rainy and windy conditions at Brennan Field in Middle Village, The Christ the King (CK) Lady Royals defeated Mary Louis Academy (TMLA) of Jamaica Estates 5-0 last Wednesday, Oct. 22.
With the win, King clinched first place in the Brooklyn/Queens Catholic High Schools first division for the sixth year out of the last seven, coach John Fayad said.
King started with an offensive formation and was able to move the ball effectively into TMLA’s defensive area. Andrea Cardozo opened up the score in the ninth minute when she received a deflection off the bar after Kiana Leger’s free kick. Leger doubled up the lead on a free kick from 20 yards out in minute 19.
Leger, who had a “tremendous game,” was fouled again 25 yards out of the box and the free kick was converted by Diana Paravatos in the 30th minute, Coach Fayad said. Sarah Nolan made the score 4-0 after receiving a through ball from Leger and was able to beat TMLA’s goal keeper to end the half.
The conditions deteriorated even further in the second half with 30 mph winds and heavy rain, according to Fayad. The bad weather did not stand in Leger’s way, as she netted her second score of the day on a give and go with Cardozo in the 54th minute of the game. The rest of the contest saw several chances come and go until the final whistle, with King securing the shutout victory.
The Lady Royals’ next game will be for the league championship at Aviator Field two in Brooklyn this Saturday, Nov. 1, at 4:45 p.m.
