Fund-raiser slated for late Ridgewood graffitist Wulf

By Sarina Trangle

Those mourning Ridgewood graffiti legend Jason Wulf are hoping tagged tributes can help finance his gravestone.

Family and friends organized a fund-raiser for Wulf this Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Powerhouse Arena, at 37 Main St. in Brooklyn.

His fiancée, Eileen Gubelman, said artists such as Peak, JA, JD and Giz had donated artwork on canvasses, T-shirts, hats and other attire. Proceeds from such sales will go toward the $6,000 that Gubelman said is the cost of most gravestones.

Friends and fans flocked to blogs, such as the art-focused Animal website, to remember Wulf after published reports said the 42-year-old was found dead beside the third rail of subway tracks in Brooklyn July 2.

Wulf, a Ridgewood resident known in the graffiti world by his tag DG, is credited with founding the New Wave Crew, painting subway trains amid strict clean car crackdowns and embracing an old-school attitude of not seeking mainstream recognition, according to Animal.

Gubelman said fans helped collect the $10,000 needed for his funeral and artists had painted murals in his honor in Paris, Russia, Africa and several states.

“He was an amazing artist, great friend, my other half and he will live in the hearts of all of us forever!” Gubelman wrote, noting the two had lived in Ridgewood for about nine years.
