South Asian activist appointed to EDCNYC

By Sadef Ali Kully

The de Blasio administration announced the appointment of 10 new members to the city Economic Development Corporation’s board of directors, including a former Queens resident.

Pam Kwatra, a former Corona resident and an Indian-American woman with strong ties to the South Asian Queens community, was appointed last month to the organization that leverages the city’s assets to create jobs and drive growth, ensuring equitable and sustainable development across all five boroughs.

The appointees, who include business, community, nonprofit and academic leaders, will join the organization’s 27-member board, which helps to guide NYCEDC’s agenda.

For decades, Kwatra has been a community activist working on behalf of Indian Americans in the New York metropolitan area. She has also been a small business owner while raising her family in Corona.

Kwatra was thrilled about the appointment.

“It is an agency for all New Yorkers, and so I cannot just separate the needs of South Asians in particular, although they are important to me and I will do everything I can to support them,” she said.
